Sunrise at Jekyll Island's Driftwood Beach

A black-and-white image of a barren tree on Driftwood Beach in Jekyll Island, Georgia

THE LOCATION: Driftwood Beach, Jekyll Island, Ga.

GPS: 31°6'12.1132" N 81°24'14.062" W

THE EQUIPMENT: Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max

THE STORY: It's haunting. Contemplative. Curious.

Any visit to Jekyll Island on the southeast Georgia coast, once the refuge of the Gilded Age's rich and famous, must include a stop at Driftwood Beach.

Go anytime. Go with the crowds. Go when it's empty of tourists.

You're surrounded by an array of barren, smooth driftwood, like a cemetery laid out by wind and waves, tides and hurricanes.

Go with any camera. This one, taken with an iPhone 12 Max Pro, shows just what those camera phones can do when you don't have a DSLR or mirrorless along and a wide angle lens.

And the sunflare with an iPhone does some interesting things, too.
